not(e)Allowed

ENG:
50 years ago, the cartoonist Bruno Bozzetto published “Life in a Box”, suggesting a representation of human life as a continuous movement inside limited spaces, or boxes.
Starting from this concept, not(e)Allowed takes the abstract idea of “box” as a set of edges, limits and borders that we encounter in every day life and often made by others, regardless of the will and thoughts of whom lives within them.
The movement inside these borders is allowed but what happens if one of the edges is reached? Is it possible to go beyond it? What happens when the passive interaction that is happening within the allowed area is not enough? Are we able to set ourselves in a position of “active” interaction and to gain control over the edges of our box?

ITA:

Creativity, Extended Cognition and Artificial Intelligence

On Friday the 3rd of February 2017 I will be presenting the paper “Brain and Creativity: a cognitive approach” at the “Creativity, Extended Cognition and Artificial Intelligence” conference that will be held at Università degli Studi di Milano (Milan, IT).

I will also showcase the installation Mind the Chair which is part of the research I will present during the event.

The Sense of Exploration

This is a project by Palakshi Pal that I realized with Arduino.

“After all my friends I walked for over 10 minutes around Pimlico and it was a beautiful experience for me as I did not know where I was going. The footsteps guided me, the chatter of the people made me realise there were people around me. Sound is a very powerful sense and I believe when one is blindfolded they tend to focus towards their surrounding, through hearing and that is the only lead you have.”

“We are moving in this fast paced life where we are so unknown to our surroundings and its just the sight that enables us to be in an environment. I believe we are forgetting how strong is our ability to hear and process in a space even without seeing. This experiment made me realise that I want to challenge the power of sound and create a Library of Sounds based in and around Pimlico.”

“The whole idea of calling someone through a telephone booth and hearing the voice from the other side is what I want to create of this project. But in terms of the sound of Pimlico.
Creating a library of sounds and then dialing a code to probably hear the sound that existed in this space in the past.” (Palakshi Pal)

InterOsc

This is the final project of my Undergraduate Degree in Informatica Musicale (Computer Science Applied to Music).

The idea is to enhance the modular synth shown at the Museo degli Strumenti Musicali di Milano, allowing people to play with it. Therefore, as in the original synth, the first part of the installation, based on Kinect, is about frequency generation, while the second part – Arduino + IR sensors – is about filtering the generated audio. I tried to define a specific format of installation that could be applied to different context. Talking about strenght and usability of the installation, the main focus was about defining ‘pointing’ or rather the area – on the original synthesizer – where the user is poiting with the arms. The major issues found are due to limits of the Kinect, solved with some algorithms (avg and wavg) and triggers (hysteresis).
Here’s a pic of the synthesizer. The second module has oscillators (white), and is where the first part of the installation takes place.
The last module has filters and is where the sensors should be placed to realize ‘virtual’ filters.

Mind the Chair

Mind the Chair is an interactive installation which focuses on giving a real time audio/visual representation of the activity of our brain, and to show how it can be possible to control it. In fact, the installation allows to visualize the level of concentration of a person, through an audio/visual answer (LED lights and sounds generation/manipulation). While using the headset it is easy to understand how it is possible to ‘control’ our brain and therefore to intervene on our level of concentration, to modify light intensity or filtering the sound.
